People have traveled from around the world to spend the Fourth of July at the September 11th Memorial.

Visitors gathered at the 9/11 Memorial and for a woman from Michigan, being at the memorial was especially poignant and not because it was her birthday.

"For me, 9/11 was devastating, it was very sad – being here, it brings back memories," said Gloria Korkoin.

Korkoin lived in New York City nearly 40 years ago.

"I watched the World Trade Center go up and when I was at my office in Michigan I saw them fall -- it was surreal," said Korkoin.

Much further away was a family from Mumbai who was here for the first time.

I was in Mumbai when it happened. It was big news," said one member of the family.

Traveling all the way from India, the family made it a point to be here on America's Independence Day.

"That's the reason; we wanted to see it on this day."

Another family that was visiting the memorial, their young son was too young to see the towers fall, but his emotions were mixed.

"I'm happy because of the recovery, but I'm sad for those who died on 9/11," said 11-year-old Rohil Sheth.

The ones who experienced 9/11 with their own eyes realize what this day is all about – our freedom.

"I think every American and visitor should know what sacrifice was and it was a huge sacrifice," said Korkoin.
