Congressman Charles Rangel has decided to comment about his apparent re-election win.
Rangel made his first public appearance since last week's primary election. The Congressman says it's up to the court to decide what really happened in this hotly contested race.
Incumbent Rangel stepped into the Fourth of July sunlight in front of the Harlem State Office Building to remind constituents that he had a history of supporting voters' rights, going back to the civil rights marches in the South.
Rangel claims the current dispute over last month's Democratic primary stems from powerful, deep pocketed opponents who want him out at all costs.
"We are going through a time that the marches I participated in, the 54 miles from Selma to Montgomery, voting rights we fought and died for – people are trying to take those rights away as we talk," said Rangel.
Wednesday's surprise holiday press conference comes less than 24 hours after his main challenger, Sen. Adriano Espaillat, filed a scathing 21-page lawsuit in State Supreme Court against the Board of Elections.
Everything from registered voters being turned away, fake voters casting ballots and Spanish speaking voters harassed and ignored – something Espaillat said Monday was widespread.
The BOE has come under fire for the length of time it's taken them to tally the votes. The BOE Commissioner defends his workers.
Paper ballots are expected to be counted tomorrow morning.
