Doctors say it might be another three days before and MTA police officer will know if he will ever be able to see out of his left eye again.
This after MTA officer John Barnett was stabbed by and emotionally disturbed man with a knife before shooting and killing the assailant Wednesday morning in Queens.
The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. at the Long Island Railroad station on Sutphin Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica.
Officer Barnett was stabbed in the left eye without warning by 46-year-old Edgar Owens. Barnett was able to fire off shots that killed Owens.
Barnett was rushed to Jamaica Hospital and is expected to recover from his injury. He needed surgery after suffering a "devastating wound" to his left eye, according to MTA officials.
Owens was also taken to Jamaica Hospital but died from his gunshot wounds.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement:
"This morning, MTA police officer John Barnett was viciously attacked by a knife-wielding assailant at the Sutphin Boulevard LIRR station in Jamaica, Queens. I spoke with Officer Barnett prior to him going in to surgery and thanked him on behalf of all New Yorkers for his courage," said Cuomo. "Today we are reminded once again of the bravery and sacrifice of our men and women in law enforcement, and the many dangers that accompany the important job of keeping our state's residents safe. We applaud Officer Barnett's bravery and pray for a full recovery."
According to the New York Post, Owens, who is a Bronx resident, has a history of disputes with cops.
MTA officials said Officer Barnett was alert and was able to recall the details of the incident.
The incident did not disrupt LIRR service and trains are running as scheduled.
