NYC woman dies in Thruway crash

A 34-year-old New York City woman died and four others were hospitalized after a single vehicle accident on the NYS Thruway late Tuesday night.

State Police said that Russhelle T. Thompson was northbound on I-87 near mile post marker 122.4 in the Town of Coxsackie, Greene County around 11:04 p.m. when the passenger side rear tire of the 1998 Mercury Montaineer she was driving blew out.

The vehicle spun and went into the center median.  It struck the guiderail and became airborne.  The vehicle continued across both southbound lanes and stopped upside down against the bank off the west shoulder.

During the roll over, a 12-year-old was thrown from the SUV and was listed in critical condition in the pediatric ICU at Albany Medical Center suffering from internal injuries.

The remaining occupants, between the ages of 12 and 21 were in Albany Medical Center being treated for non-life threatening injuries ranging from contusions to a slight fracture in the neck.
 
The southbound lanes were closed until approximately 1:52 a.m.
