Actor Andy Griffith dead at 86

Andy Griffith, the star of hit shows The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, has died. He was 86.

Dare County Sheriff's officers tell WGHP-TV, a FOX affiliate in Greensboro, North Carolina that emergency medical crews responded to Griffith's home Tuesday morning.

Griffith lived in Roanoke Island.

Along with a storied acting career, Griffith was a successful musician. He won a Grammy in 1996 for his album "I Love to Tell the Story - 25 Timeless Hymns."

He was also inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Christian Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 1999 and 2007, respectively.

He was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.
