Health network to run ex-senator's clinic

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

One of the largest networks of community health centers has applied to take over former Sen. Pedro Espada Jr.'s flagship health clinic.

Espada was convicted in May on charges of stealing about $500,000 from his Soundview Health Center. The facility stopped serving patients after the state cut off Medicaid funding.

The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/LRmJu6 ) says the Institute for Family Health moved into the Soundview facility last week when the clinic transferred its lease. The institute's co-founder and CEO, Dr. Neil Calman, said the facility will be renamed the Stevenson Family Health Center. Its new board will have no ties to Soundview or Espada.

The move must be approved by state and federal health regulators.

Efforts to reach Espada were unsuccessful. He faces another trial on tax evasion charges next year.
