FDNY fire test on Governors Island

MYFOXNY.COM -

The FDNY is back on Governors Island setting controlled fires as part of an experiment to test fire fighting techniques.

Massive plumes of smoke seen coming from the island Monday.

Scientists joined firefighters in New York Harbor where they planned to burn 20 vacant row houses this week stuffed with modern furniture, according to fire officials.

An electronic switch ignited a match on a sofa in a decommissioned Coast Guard row house Tuesday, reported the Associated Press.

"As construction has changed in recent years, as well as the type of materials that are used in home furnishings, we have experienced fires that burn faster and reach high temperatures more quickly," said Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano.

The fire experiment was intended to gauge which techniques work best in fighting fires.

Heat resistant cameras were used to capture critical data on fire behavior.
