BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Five people have been arrested in the robbery of $4 million in jewelry from a Connecticut store in an elaborate heist that began with the kidnapping of store employees more than 40 miles away. Police say a group of men wearing masks and gloves broke into an apartment in Meriden on April 11th and bound and gagged four people, including the manager and another employee of a Lenox Jewelry store in Fairfield.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - State senators are building on a package of reforms the General Assembly passed in April addressing the Newtown school shooting, requiring annual firearms safety training for armed security in local schools and improvements in mental health services for children. Both bills passed the Senate unanimously yesterday and await further action in the House.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Researchers examining the incidence of brain cancer at jet engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut say they have found no statistically significant elevations in the rate of cancer among workers. The researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Illinois at Chicago say they've identified more than 700 workers diagnosed with tumors between 1976 and 2004 at the United Technologies subsidiary.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Communities in southeastern Connecticut that rely on the Navy submarine base as an economic engine may be breathing easier following a U.S. House subcommittee's rejection of a new round of military base closings. The House Readiness Subcommittee added language to the proposed defense budget to forbid base closings.
