Tim Skubick: Romney could ride Snyder's coattails to Mich. victory

Mitt Romney
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -
It is usually the presidential candidate who has coattails that drags other members of his own party into office. But you might see a sitting governor using his coattails to drag a presidential candidate into the White House.
What kind of nut job would come up with a screwing notion such as that? Well turns out veteran pollster Steve Mitchell is not a nut job and may actually be onto something. Everyone agrees that the 'ole James Carvelle notion that the "Economy Stupid" will prevail as the deciding factor in the hotly contest battle between the president and former Massachusetts governor.
With the state of Michigan up for grabs, the one who can legitimately take credit for Michigan's economic comeback will likely win here all other factors being equal.
Even though he claims to be one of us, Mitt Romney has done nothing, nada, zero, zilch to bring the state's economy back. In fact the Democrats continue to argue if Romney had been in charge the guys and gals on the line at GM and Chrysler would now be on the unemployment line.
Mr. Obama can try to take credit and he has more standing. After all the jobless rate is lower than it was when he took office and if Gov. Rick Snyder is correct, Michigan is on the way back. Which is where the governor's coattails, if any, come into play.
Pollster Mitchell suggests Romney can come into the state and hook his economic wagon to Mr. Snyder's in hopes that some of the governor's turnaround magic rubs off on him.
Mitchell contends Mr. Romney can say, "a Republican governor is responsible for that (bounce back) and I will govern in the way Rick Snyder governed. I will concern myself with the economy and how to move our economy forward."
It's an unusual strategy and during his last sojourn to Michigan last week, Romney did exactly that.
Regardless it is still a huge stretch to think voters will vote for Romney because they like what Gov. Snyder has done to reverse our economic fortunes. Yet, that may be the only card the Mittser has to play to turn this blue state to red.

The undone stuff Gov. Snyder and Lt. Gov. Calley are still struggling to adopt is piling up like the garbage in your neighbor's backyard and it's beginning to stink.
