Could wi-fi on subway platforms be a draw for gadget thieves?

Even though the bright blue signs spell it out, many people we talked with didn't know wi-fi existed underground at some subway stations in Chelsea.

So, now that they know, some riders said they'll use their smart phones on the subway platform much more.

That could quite possibly offer up easier pickings when it comes to subway thieves.

Earlier this year, the NYPD reported big jumps in iPhone and iPad thefts underground.

Since then, the NYPD and MTA have come together with a new campaign about "safeguarding your stuff" to encourage customers to be vigilant.

The new "Don't be a target of opportunity!" posters are printed in five languages.

"Unfortunately, these items have become tempting targets for thieves and what we are seeking to do with this campaign is remind our customers to take extra care when using them by being watchful of their environment," said NYC Transit President Thomas F. Prendergast.

More than 2,000 of the "premium square" posters are being installed on subway cars throughout the system.

For now, this wi-fi is a pilot program only running during the summer at the 6th, 7th and 8th Avenue stops along 14th Street.
