Mario Cuomo, who served as governor of New York for three terms in the 1980s and 1990s, will finally get a portrait to be displayed in the Hall of Governors at the Capitol in Albany.
Some former members of Mario Cuomo's administration and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the elder Cuomo's son, presented the former governor with a surprise birthday gift on Saturday: an oil-on-canvas portrait by artist Simmie Knox. Cuomo turned 80 on June 15.
"The collection of gubernatorial portraits in the Hall of Governors recognizes the extraordinary public servants that have changed the course of our state and nation during their lifetimes," Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "Today is a particularly special day for me, as I have the privilege of unveiling the official portrait of a man who not only has served New York State for many years including twelve as governor, but a father who also instilled in me the value of public service."
Knox, a portraiture artist, has painted the official White House portraits of President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton.
He based the Cuomo portrait on a on a 1989 photograph by Don Pollard.
Cuomo long resisted having his portrait hung in the Capitol and even refused to sit for a portrait, according to a 2008 New York Times report. In fact, former Gov. George Pataki, who served three terms after Cuomo, already has a portrait on display.
After Saturday's surprise, Mario Cuomo still said he didn't want a portrait but ultimately said he liked the painting, the Times reported.
Cuomo served as governor from 1983 to 1994. He lost his bid for a fourth term to Pataki.
