Snyder vs. Matty Moroun and the Ambassador Bridge

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Remember the old Spy vs. Spy in Mad magazine?

Well this one will be one tough nerd vs. one tough cookie. One business guy vs.another over the construction of that second span between Detroit and Windsor.

In this corner, Gov. Rick Snyder and in the other, one Matty Moroun the irascible owner of the Ambassador Bridge who doesn't want the competition from the former computer CEO.

At the outset, you have to give the odds to the tough cookie just based on the record to date.

At almost every juncture in this tormented debate, which is approaching the amount of time it takes to have a baby, it's been the Moroun's running up the score like Mr. James in the NBA.

The governor has consistently been out maneuvered, out-spent, and even he admits he's made some miscues. But he got off the mat long enough to work a unique deal with the Canadians to build the bridge without one legislative vote being taken.

It was the only time the governor got an "in your face" moment but even that was short-lived. The next round is headed for the courts and the statewide ballot where the governator's chances are iffy.

The Morouns have announced they "bought," as in paid for enough petition signatures, to potentially give Michigan citizens veto power over the bridge.

But the gov's legal eagles say it doesn't matter. Once the bridge is underway, you can't put the girders back in the bottle even if the voters want to.

This will be fought out in the courts and with a pocketful of cash, the Morouns can arm-wrestle the governor in that arena for as long as they want.

And each day the bridge is not built, it's one more day of profits for the bridge guys.

Synder-ittes warn you should not under-estimate this governor, but so far the "tough nerd" stuff has left something to be desired.
