Swedish university professor charged for cutting off wife's lip, eating flesh

STOCKHOLM -

A Swedish university professor sliced off his estranged wife's lip and ate it -- so she could "never kiss again."

The unnamed 52-year-old, who is a respected researcher at Stockholm's famous Karolinska Institute, was charged  with aggravated assault for the May attack, Aftonbladet reported.

The professor was angered by his wife's request for a divorce and waited until she went to sleep before cutting off her lower lip and eating the flesh.

"He did it so that she would never be able to kiss again and said, 'I'll get four years, but you're getting a life sentence," prosecutor Jakob Holmberg told the TT news agency.

The husband, who also cut his wife's arms in the attack, was facing a maximum 10-year jail sentence.

The victim was moved to a secret location and underwent surgery to try to repair her bottom lip, which was almost entirely removed in the attack, but surgeons described her injuries as "permanent."
