Gov. Cuomo endorses Rep. Rangel in House race

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is giving Rep. Charles Rangel a big endorsement in his re-election bid.

Cuomo will lend his star power as well as his standing as head of the state's Democratic Party to Rangel, who faces Democratic state Sen. Andriano Espaillat (ehs-PYE'-aht). Cuomo says Rangel's seniority in the House of Representatives is key.

Cuomo made his endorsement for the June 26 primary on WOR Radio.

The governor says he's seen Rangel work effectively since Cuomo served as President Clinton's housing secretary.

Cuomo says Rangel is tireless and serves New York well in part because seniority in the house is a powerful tool in securing aid and passing legislation.

The district includes Manhattan and part of the Bronx.
