Police save 50 dogs after raiding Bronx fighting ring

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Nearly 50 dogs were rescued Thursday from a windowless New York basement, where police say a dog fighting ring was secretly running for more than a year.

Cops arrested Raul Sanchez, 57, the Bronx building's superintendent, and hit him with several animal-fighting felony charges.

The dogs -- mostly pit bulls, including some puppies -- were living stacked in filthy cages, officials said.

Cops hauled out six treadmills that were equipped with harnesses that would force the dogs to run.

Residents of the Sherman Avenue apartment building said they had no idea. Sources said the dogs' vocal chords were damaged to prevent their barking.

Favale said the conditions were "deplorable" and the dogs were "in various stages of abuse and injury."

They were taken to an animal shelter, police said.
