A Long Island man was arrested after filling his car up on the side of the road with water.
State troopers saw Salvatore Ostraco, 51, of Levittown, on the shoulder of the Meadowbrook Parkway.
He was filling up the gas tank of a black Oldsmobile with a portable container.
Troopers say they noted obvious signs of intoxication when they started talking to him. Ostraco admitted to the police that he had put water into the tank instead of gas.
Police say Ostraco failed sobriety tests and was arrested.
They found hypodermic needles, prescription drugs and what they described as an illegal knife in the car.
Ostraco was charged with driving while impaired by drugs, drug possession and weapons charges.
Ostraco was held by police as he waited for arraignment in Nassau County First District Court.
