Man accused of shooting female roommate

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. -

A 58-year-old Prescott Valley man has been arrested, accused of shooting his female roommate.

Officers arrived at the home early Tuesday morning. The roommate, a 56-year-old female, sustained a serious gunshot wound to her arm.

Police say John Frank Heinkel III shot her. A witness who saw the shooting said Heinkel first pointed the gun at him, waved the gun around, and then fired, striking the victim.

Heinkel told officers he was trying to break up a fight between two males at the residence. He said he was afraid for the safety of his roommate, and so he got out a gun and fired a shot to scare everyone -- and that wounding the victim was an accident.

The victim was flown to a hospital for treatment. Heinkel was booked into jail for aggravated assault-domestic violence, aggravated assault, endangerment, and disorderly conduct.

Alcohol was believed to be a factor.
