TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Tucson officials are hoping to have a highly increased police force by next summer.
The Arizona Daily Star reports the Tucson Police Department has set a goal to hire more officers by June 2013, the end of the next fiscal year.
Assistant Chief John Leavitt said Tuesday those positions would maintain the department have at least 900 officers, more than the last few years but fewer than the staffing that was available four years ago.
Leavitt says there are about 930 officers, compared to more than 1,100 in September 2008.
Leavitt says several hiring grants are helping pay for the recruiting of more officers despite budget cuts. But he says the agency is still operating with a smaller department than it is accustomed to.
