Scorching temperatures come to an end, for now, on Friday with scattered showers and thunderstorms bringing in cooler air later in the day.

The mercury reached into the upper-90s and the humidity made it feel much hotter over the past several days. The high in New York City hit 96 on Wednesday, the first day of summer.

The high temperature on Friday is expected to hit 93 degrees.

Dr. Robert Glatter of Lenox Hill Hospital advises people to drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid excess caffeine and products with high amounts of sugar. He said that sports drinks that contain electrolytes such as sodium and potassium with small amounts of glucose may help to combat dehydration.

Several cooling centers are open in all five boroughs. CLICK HERE to find one near you.

Hot and humid weather can cause illness, even death. The NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene has tips on preventing heat illness.
