A jury has acquitted former pitcher Roger Clemens of federal perjury charges he faced in the wake of comments he made before a congressional panel about steroids in baseball.

Federal authorities accused him of lying when Clemens said he did not use human growth hormone and other banned substances.

The government's primary witness was Clemens's former trainer, Brian McNamee, who claimed he injected Clemens with banned substances many times.

McNamee said he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998, 2000, and 2001, and HGH. in 2000.

Former teammate and close friend Andy Pettitte also testified that Clemens told him about using HGH. But under cross-examination, Pettitte conceded that he might have misunderstood what Clemens said.

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, has pitched for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros, winning the coveted award with each team at least once.

He has two World Series rings, which he won with the Yankees in 1999 and 2000.

Clemens, 49, has 354 wins and 4,672 strikeouts in his career.
