The shoe company Adidas has canceled plans to release a new sneaker that had some people drawing references to slavery.
A photo of the shoes was uploaded to the Adidas Facebook page on June 14.
They show a chain from the back of the shoe leading up to a Velcro "shackle" that goes around the wearer's ankle.
The caption with the photo reads: "Tighten up your style with the JS Roundhouse Mids, dropping in August."
It goes on to say: "Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles."
Reaction has been mixed on the company's own page with some people saying the controversy has been blown out of proportion and others accusing the shoe company of racism.
Adidas responded on Monday, issuing a statement saying: "The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott's outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery."
But the uproar got bad enough that the company later apologized and canceled the release.
"Since the shoe debuted on our Facebook page ahead of its market release in August, Adidas has received both favorable and critical feedback," the company said. "We apologize if people are offended by the design and we are withdrawing our plans to make them available in the marketplace."
