Harlem neighborhood under lock-down overnight

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

Some Harlem residents are upset because of security measures police are taking on a two-block stretch of West 129th Street.

The New York Post reports that the New York Police Department has put up barricades in the area from dusk until dawn for two weeks. People are allowed in only if they can show they live in the area or have been invited by a resident.

The measures follow gun violence in the area, including the death of a man shot on a basketball court.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly tells the newspaper he understands the strategy has inconvenienced some people but the department is trying to "save young lives."

Resident John Barnes asks when his neighborhood became a gated community. But some say they feel safer with the measures.
