Report: businesses make $4M holding students' phones

MYFOXNY.COM -

An analysis by the NY Post found that the stores and trucks that hold cell phones for students while they are in class at NYC public schools make about $4.2M off the service.

Students pay $1 a day to store their phones.  A cell phone ban has lead to the financial success of the store and mobile storage businesses.

The industry rakes in $22,800 a day in some of the city's poorest districts, the Post reported Monday.

Officials have argued the phones are a distraction and the ban is a necessity.

Last week, dozens of students had their phones stolen when armed robbers knocked-over one of the phone trucks outside of a Bronx school.
