White House urges quick formation of new government in Greece

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The White House congratulated Greece on conducting its election-Sunday and urged the quick formation of a new government to deal with the country's economic woes.

"We hope this election will lead quickly to the formation of a new government that can make timely progress on the economic challenges facing the Greek people," White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.

"As President Obama and other world leaders have said, we believe that it is in all our interests for Greece to remain in the euro area while respecting its commitment to reform."

Exit polls showed that Greece's conservative New Democracy party narrowly edged out the radical left, anti-austerity Syriza party in Sunday's vote.

New Democracy may be able to form a pro-bailout coalition government with the Socialist Pasok party -- an outcome that could allay fears of a Greek exit from the 17-nation eurozone.
