An artist is trying to repair his sand sculpture that was damaged on Manhattan's waterfront.

57-year-old Matthew Long had spent the last three days carving 23 tons of sand into a sculpture of a tall ship only to discover it partially damaged and covered in boot prints when he arrived Saturday morning at South Street Seaport.

Once the sculpture is completed it will be ten feet high and occupy a 20-by-20 foot space.

The sand sculpture is part of a promotion for Long's line of sand sculpting tool and for an exhibit for a museum.

The effort started Wednesday, June 13, when a truck hauled the tons of sand from the New Jersey shore to lower Manhattan.
