LONG BEACH ISLAND, N.J. -- A stretch of New Jersey beach was closed Saturday after medical waste was found in the water.
Hypodermic needles, most likely flushed into the sewer system by diabetics who inject insulin, washed ashore on Long Beach Island in Ocean County, WCAU-TV reported.
The closure affects a stretch of about 15 miles.
Long Beach Island is the most visited beach area in New Jersey.
Long Beach Island Health Director Tim Hilferty said sewer systems in New York Harbor were overflowing after heavy rains in the area last week.
"This stuff comes down the coast and the northeast wind blows it ashore," he explained.
Crews were working Saturday to clean up the waste. It was not known if the stretch of beach would be reopened Sunday, according to WCAU.
