There is a report about the NYPD officer accused of killing an unarmed carjacking suspect in Brooklyn.

According to the New York Times and New York Post, detective Phil Atkins has been sued at least six times since 2003 over alleged brutality.

The reports say the city has paid $224,000 to settle lawsuits against him.

Atkins' gun discharged Thursday as he struggled with 23-year-old Shantel Davis, who had smashed a stolen car into a minivan.

Davis crashed a stolen car while trying to run away from police in East Flatbush on June 14.

Patrick Lynch, President of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, said lawsuits against officers are common and is confident Officer Atkins properly.

Davis also had a history. She was awaiting trial on charges that she was part of a gang that shot a man five times during a break-in a year ago.
