President Obama, First Lady sign new WTC steel beam during Ground Zero visit

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama signed one of the final steel beams at One World Trade Center while reviewing the rebuilding efforts at Ground Zero on Thursday.

Joined by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and other dignitaries, Obama inscribed his name on the beam and wrote, "We remember, we rebuild, we come back stronger!," The Wall Street Journal reported.

He spoke with construction workers and thanked them for building the "incredible structuring," adding, "we couldn't be prouder of you guys. This is what the American spirit is all about."

Cuomo, Christie, and Bloomberg also signed the beam.

The Obamas visited the site before attending two evening fundraisers, including one at the Manhattan home of actors Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Obama was last at the World Trade Center in 2011 on the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

New York authorities say One World Trade Center, popularly known as Freedom Tower, will measure 1,776 feet when finished, becoming the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.
