N.J. doctor's license suspended

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -

New Jersey's Board of Medical Examiners has temporarily suspended the license of an anesthesiologist who has been performing major spinal surgeries without proper training.

Dr. Richard Kaul owns the New Jersey Spine and Rehabilitation Center in Pompton Lakes.

The board says one of the six patients that he treated developed an infection and needed corrective surgery.

Kaul's attorney, Bob Convoy, tells The Star-Ledger of Newark he plans to appeal.

The board suspended Kaul's license for six months in 2003 for failing to disclose that he was convicted of negligent manslaughter in London in 2001. A patient he had sedated for a tooth extraction went into cardiac arrest and died six days later.
