Former gangster Henry Hill -- the inspiration for the film "Goodfellas" -- died Tuesday in Los Angeles, TMZ reported.

The entertainment website reported that Hill's girlfriend, named as Lisa, told them the 69-year-old lost his battle with an undisclosed illness.

"He had been sick for a long time," she said. "His heart gave out."

Hill reformed toward the end of his life, working to mend his relationship with family members, including his two children, TMZ said.

He was portrayed by Ray Liotta in Martin Scorsese's legendary 1990 film, which also starred Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
