Woman found dead in Washington Heights shooting

Police say a woman was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in Washington Heights.

Police responded to a 911 call of shots fired in an apartment on Audubon Avenue. They saw a man holding a gun in the lobby of the building, the NYPD said. That man fired at the front door and then ran further inside the building, police said.

Emergency Services officers soon entered the building and found that man lying unconscious, with a gunshot wound to his head, the NYPD said.

Police entered the apartment where the shots were fired and found the body of a 26-year-old woman. She had been shot in the head, police said.

The alleged gunman was taken to Columbia University Medical Center in critical condition. His is in police custody, the NYPD said.
