SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

An 83-year-old had just finished getting gas and was heading into the store when police say Everege Dickens walked up behind with a gun and demanded the elderly man's cash.  He handed it over, but that's when police say Dickens also stole the man's keys and took off in his car.

Dickens sporting black jailhouse clothing and his arm in a sling appeared confused throughout his video arraignment.  For most of the hearing, he rocked back and forth and was slow to respond to the magistrate's questions.

This is the same man that just a day ago Southfield Police claim went on a crime spree.  It started with a robbery at gunpoint at the Marathon gas station at Ten Mile and Telegraph.  It escalated to a carjacking, then a police chase which ended in a crash.  When Dickens tried to get away on foot, officers shot him in the shoulder.  Police claim he was caught with evidence tying him directly to the crime.

"Recovered from his right front pants pocket [was] the handgun, which was a revolver style.  It was loaded with three rounds.  Also recovered [was] the victim's money," said a Southfield officer.

Dickens was arraigned on eight counts, including armed robbery, carjacking and felony firearm. He has a prior record for child abuse and suffers from mental health issues.

The 83-year-old victim did not suffer any physical injuries. His family declined to talk to us about the ordeal.

Dickens' bond was set at $2-million. He is scheduled back in court on June 18.  If he is found guilty, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
