A New Jersey man is under arrest on animal cruelty charges after he was found killing squirrels and hanging their dead bodies.

Linden police arrested Richard Baird, 49, E. 14th St. on June 1, 2012.

Someone called the local board of health with an animal cruelty complaint.

Police were dispatched and officers found the bodies of several dead squirrels hanging from a wood fence at the rear of the man's home.

Baird told police that he was having a problem with squirrels entering his house through a hole.  He had attempted to cover the hole with a piece of metal but it didn't keep the squirrels out.

Police say Baird then placed some peanut butter on a tree in his rear yard and shot the squirrels with a BB gun as they went for the peanut butter.

For some unknown reason, he then chose to hang the bodies over the fence.

Baird will face a judge on June 26th.  He could face up to $1,000 fine and six months in jail.  The judge could also sentence him to up to 30 days of community service at a designated animal shelter as punishment.
