A 16-year-old girl remains in critical condition after being pulled out of the water at Cedar Lake in Minneapolis.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the 16-year-old girl who was rescued after spending 40 minutes submerged in Cedar Lake has died.

At about 2:15 on Sunday, responders began searching for the teen, who was swimming with friends and jumping off a floating dock when she did not resurface.

The girl had been in the water for about 10 minutes before emergency personnel, and spent about 40 minutes submerged.

Rescue divers found the teen in about 12 feet of water by the dock, nearly 100 feet from shore.

Paramedics spent 20 minutes with her at the scene and she was then transported to HCMC in critical condition.

Her identity has not yet been released.

There was no lifeguard scheduled to be at the beach that day, but the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Department wishes there had been. In fact, the board had hoped to have one stationed at Cedar Point Beach -- and at six other Minneapolis beaches -- last weekend; however, the city did not have enough applicants for the job. That left two beaches unstaffed for one more week.
