Hitchhiker writing 'The Kindness of America' shot by stranger on West Virginia roadside

GLASGOW, W.Va -

A man hitchhiking across the US was recovering in the hospital Monday after he was shot by a stranger as he waited by the roadside in West Virginia.

Raymond Dolin, who is writing a memoir called "The Kindness Of America," was shot just before 6:00pm local time on Saturday while hitching a lift on Highway 2, a few miles west of Glasgow, the Billings Gazette reported.

A man driving a maroon pickup pulled up next to him, shot him and drove away.

Dolin was able to flag down a passerby and is now recovering at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow.

Authorities launched a manhunt for the pickup driver. Charles Lloyd Danielson III, of Washington, was eventually arrested in Culbertson four hours after the incident.

Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier told the newspaper, "It's totally random. These two gentlemen did not know each other. They'd never seen each other and we don't know of a motive. We don't know why this happened."

Danielson was held at the Roosevelt County Detention Center on suspicion of felony assault with a weapon and driving under the influence. He was due to appear in court Monday.
