Greek crime gang targets bank of accounts of the dead

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS -

Greek police busted a crime gang that used an 81-year-old woman to extract thousands of euros from the bank accounts of dead people.

The 10-member Athens gang withdrew almost €75,000 ($94,000) before it was caught, the Kathimerini newspaper reported Sunday.

A crooked bank employee provided details of depositors who recently passed away. The gang then forged identification papers and employed an 81-year-old woman to make the withdrawals.

Crime rates have risen in Greece as its economy collapses. The country is in its fifth straight year of recession, with the economy on course to contract by more than five percent this year, while unemployment is above 20 percent.
