DETROIT (WJBK) -

Police in Detroit say two young siblings missing after leaving school on the city's southwest side have been found safe.

The department's Southwestern District says 9-year-old Michael Marcellus and his 10-year-old sister Deonna Fletcher were recovered late Thursday.

They were reported missing Thursday afternoon when they didn't return home. Police Sgt. Eren Stephens says in an email they ran away because they were "on punishment."

Stephens say the children were found when a person spotted them walking down a street.
