Detroit seeks regional police help for fireworks

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says his office has reached out to sheriff's officials in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and the state police to assist the city during an annual fireworks display on the Detroit River between the city and Windsor, Ontario.

Bing said Wednesday that public safety costs about $700,000 for the Detroit Target Fireworks.

He says "future Detroit-based events that attract and entertain millions from throughout southeast Michigan are being carefully reviewed."

Detroit is under a consent agreement with Gov. Rick Snyder to reduce a $265 million budget deficit and long-term debt.

Bing says budget constraints make it "no longer feasible to have these events funded primarily by Detroit taxpayers."

Tens of thousands of people typically fill downtown and Belle Isle park to view the show.
