Costly kitten stolen from Shakopee pet shop

SHAKOPEE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police are hoping to track down the woman who was caught on camera when she embarked on a costly kitten caper at pet store in Shakopee.

Petland in Shakopee rescued a litter of Persian kittens -- along with their mother -- when they were dropped off at the store's doorstep. The kitten that was taken is estimated to be worth about $500.

Jeff Latko says animals are his life -- and he strives to help people at Petland find the perfect pet.

"There's a bond that develops between the person and an animal," he explained. "To see that in a person's face and eyes is a really good thing to see -- and means a lot to me."

As a manager at Petland, he's pretty protective of his animals -- and even more so after a woman walked in on Saturday night and stole a kitten.

Cameras caught footage of the kitty caper, and a woman be seen casing out the kittens through a glass window.

"She's looking at the kitty and looking around to see if there is anyone in the area of the kennel," said Latko.

Next, she walks into the restricted kennel area and calmly grabs the 8-week-old kitten, taking it away from its mother and two siblings. She put the kitten in a purse or bag and walked out of the store. All told, she was inside the store for less than five minutes.

"I want the kitty back right now -- want to make sure it gets proper nutrition," he said, adding that he is concerned that the woman who took the animal may not know -- or care -- how to care for the cat properly.

Latko says some of his employees recognized the woman from a few days ago, when she came in to scope out the same litter. Now, he's hoping someone in the public will recognize her too and report her.

"We will come after you," Latko vowed.

A few years ago, a pug was stolen from the same store -- but police were able to track down the dog within a day and return it.
