One teen is dead and another is in custody after a shooting in Minneapolis Friday afternoon.
The shooting took place around 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon at the 2900 block of Bloomington Ave.
The family is identifying the victim as 16-year-old Trequan Sykes and, according to police, the shooting took place during an argument behind Sykes' home.
Police say Trequan collapsed just inside his apartment and was then rushed to the hospital – but it was too late.
Minneapolis police arrested the 16-year-old suspect near 28th Street East and Bloomington Avenue South around 7 p.m. Friday. He was then booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center pending murder charges.
"It's senseless," said Minneapolis City Council member Gary Schiff. "Kids using guns to address conflict. It's just incomprehensible how easy it is for a kid to get a hand on a gun in this city. If kids didn't have guns this might have been a fist fight."
According to his family, Sykes was a superb athlete at Roosevelt High School, especially in football.
Schiff says it's the first murder in his ward in about a year, but unfortunately he fears it's not the end of the violence.
