Officials at Citgo say they are banning the sale of K2 and other synthetic marijuana products at their gas stations in metro Detroit.
In an email, Citgo spokesperson Melissa Maslar Arnoff says recent FOX 2 reports have underscored the dangers of the products. "CITGO shares the concerns of parents and community leaders and has sought the assistance of its Marketers to stop the sale of these types of substances at locally owned CITGO branded locations, even in states where the substances may still be legal," said Anroff.
In a letter to owners, Citgo warns of pulling its branding from gas stations who fail to cooperate.
Officials in West Bloomfield are considering a citywide ban on K2, a packaged potpourri that is labeled not for consumption, but kids smoke it to get high anyway. A bill is also in the works at the state level.
Michigan still hasn't outlawed synthetic marijuana products because manufacturers keep manipulating the substance. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Governor Rick Snyder are calling for immediate action.
