First Grader Recovering From Stroke

(WJBK) -

Strokes are one of the top-10 killers of children in the United States. Kids can have strokes for a number of reasons. See how it happened for one girl who is just in first grade.

Erika Wilcox was first diagnosed with a brain tumor, but doctors later discovered that she had a rare brain disease. It all started when she had a tingling sensation in her right hand, which alarmed Erika's mom. Doctors performed surgery on both sides of Erika's brain to allow for more blood flow.

2 weeks after the second surgery the tingling in Erika's hand was gone. She even began favoring her right hand again.

Some of the main causes for strokes in children include congenital heart disease, neck injuries, and infections. Doctors say if your child's arms or legs aren't working properly, you may want to treat it as an emergency.
