It's anarchy.
Here are the major stories out of Detroit. And that's just this week.
Anarchy, according to Webster's
Dictionary: political disorder and violence. When the political
mechanisms cease to move, society devolves into a war of all against
all. Anarchy.
And where was the political leadership this week?
Convicted felon and former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was moralizing from
the pulpit of a city church, taking no responsibility for the millions
of dollars looted during his tenure from the poorest urban dwellers in
America. He told congregants his old self died. If that's true, then the
old Kilpatrick would be the 60th homicide victim in Detroit so far this
year. The bloodiest city in America.
Current mayor Dave Bing
stood in the pulpit of city hall the next morning, also moralizing. He
looked like a man drowning in a suit too big for him. He offered no plan
to restore order. Instead, he gave a lecture. He said parents needed to
do a better job raising their kids. "It is too late to start
disciplining them at age 12 or 14," he lectured. Tell that to the woman
who lost her head after she told her 14-year-old he was staying home.
And then there was Wayne County Executive Bob Ficano. In his state of
the county speech in downtown Detroit -- Ficano acknowledged that under
his guidance, the county is broke, scandal plagued and under FBI
investigation. And then he blamed it all on his underlings. "I should
have had better oversight and for letting you down, I apologize," he
lamely offered. And then he promised, despite public outrage, that he
would stay and fix the mess he created.
Today marks the 4th
anniversary of my return to Michigan. I came back to raise my child
where I was raised. After a week like this one, I'm not sure I'd do it
again, but I know I'm not running away. It'll never get better if we
leave it to the thugs and the inept.
