FCS Reporter's Notebook: NATO Protesters

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One of the golden rules of politics these days is "stay on message."

But when everyone has a different idea of what that message should be, well, then you get what we experienced last week during the NATO Summit.

The right to protest is one of the most important and cherished principles of democracy. But tell me this, what exactly were all these people protesting last weekend?

Here's just part of the laundry list: NATO, NATO involvement in Afghanistan, wars in general, the use of drones, Wall Street, the banking bailout, cuts to health services, the closure of mental health facilities, President Obama, Mayor Emanuel, Jon Burge, Chicago police in general... and that's just some of the signs and causes I witnessed marching around town.

True story, I actually saw a nasty verbal fight break out between some of the protesters who had just gotten off a bus from New York. One group wanted to protest the police, another: cuts to mental health.

So if the protesters can't even agree on what they're protesting, how are we supposed to get the message?

Give the ‘60s this-- at least they could agree on Vietnam. Seems to me the protest movement is badly in need of someone like Karl Rove, or David Axelrod. Yes, the very types they're protesting, to help them get on message.
