Crime on NYC subway hits seven-year high

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Crime on the New York subway is at its highest level for seven years, according to new statistics from the NYPD.

An average of 7.3 major felonies occurred every day in the first quarter of 2012, a disturbing figure that included three rapes and 518 grand larcenies.

The figures show that last year's daily rate of major felonies -- which includes robberies, assaults and grand larcenies -- was 6.18.

In 2005, that figure was at 9.24.

Much of the spike in crime was blamed on tech-hungry thieves stealing gadgets like iPads and smartphones, NYPD Chief of Transit Joseph Fox said.

He told the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's transit committee meeting Monday, "The increase is absolutely driven by the increased attention to electronics."
