Kwame Kilpatrick Plans Speech and Book Signing at Detroit Church

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is planning to return to his hometown next Sunday, speaking at a worship service in honor of Black History Month.

According to a release from The New Life Family Church of Detroit, Kilpatrick will offer a message of, "Respect, Repentance and Restoration." Kilpatrick will also be signing copies of his book, 'Surrendered: The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick' immediately following the worship service.

The New Life Family Church is located at 13881 Joseph Campau, doors for the 10am event open to the public at 9am.

The church says cameras and other recording devices will not be allowed inside of the church before, during or proceeding the event.

Reached by Fox 2, Pastor Welton Smith would not disclose whether the former mayor will be compensated for his appearance. Earlier this week The Detroit News reported Michigan officials are ready to raise his restitution to around $500 a month, roughly half of what Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy requested.

In emails obtained by the newspaper Kilpatrick has said he had to borrow money to make his $160 restitution payment last month and has not repaid $240,000 in loans from Peter Karmanos and others.

Kilpatrick, who is currently living in a Dallas, Texas suburb, spent 14 months in prison for violating the terms of his probation by failing to report assets. He still owes the City of Detroit more than $860,000 in restitution and last week was ordered to pay an additional $11,000 fine for campaign finance violations.

A federal racketeering case against Kilpatrick is scheduled to go to trial in September.
