Arizona Boy, 10, to Be Sentenced for Shooting Father

Posted:

A 10-year-old eastern Arizona boy who fatally shot his father's friend in 2008 is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in St. Johns.

The case created a buzz in legal circles as experts questioned whether the boy had the mental capacity to understand the crimes.

Jail time at a county facility is an option Judge Monica Stauffer can consider. But defense attorneys and prosecutors are instead pushing for the boy to be placed in a residential treatment program in Maricopa County.

The boy was 8 when he was charged in the shooting deaths of his father, 29-year-old Vincent Romero, and his father's friend, 39-year-old Timothy Romans. The two men were returning home from work on Nov. 5, 2008, when they were shot at Romero's home in St. Johns.
