3 Arrests in Child Methadone Overdose

Posted:

Three people, including the child's mother and father, have been arrested after a toddler was given methadone, overdosed, and was hospitalized.

It happened Oct. 23 at a Motel 6 in north Phoenix.

35-year-old Jennifer Campos and 37-year-old Anthony Casillas are the 2-year-old boy's parents.

The boy had been complaining from a toothache. According to a police report, Misty Murphy allegedly mixed a methadone and Kool-Aid cocktail, and gave it to the child's father who provided it to the child's mother who gave it to the child.

The boy became intoxicated off the substance, overdosed, lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Paramedics were able to revive him and transport him to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Hospital staff confirmed the boy had not only methadone, but amphetamine, nicotine, and acetone in his system. Campos and Casillas allegedly admitted to smoking meth around the children.

When 911 was called, the child's parents fled the hotel with the two other children to avoid losing them to CPS, police say. A desk clerk at the motel called 911.

The family had been hiding in hotel rooms since June, because CPS was trying to take custody of the kids.

When Campos was asked why she didn't call a dentist about the baby's tooth pain, she said she didn't have insurance and didn't want to risk her children being taken away.

Both parents were booked into jail on 4 counts of child abuse and 3 counts of child neglect. They both had outstanding warrants.

Murphy was booked on one count of child abuse.

The 2-year-old boy is recovering.
