Deadly house fire in Putnam County

Posted: Updated:

A police captain, his wife and their two teenage daughters were killed in a house fire in the town of Carmel in Putnam County, New York, said police.

Their son was hospitalized.

The fire at Larchmont Police Capt. Thomas Sullivan's home at 19 Wyndham Lane could be the deadliest in town history, according to fire officials.

"His son was the only one who made it out, in a family of five," Larchmont police Sgt. Ronald Knudson told the Journal News. "His wife and two daughters perished with Tommy. His son is in the hospital and we don't know his status," added Knudson.

The flames broke out at about 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday and were brought under control about four hours later. Firefighters and police remained on the scene Tuesday morning.

The inferno caused the house to collapse, reported FOX 5 News. The only thing left standing were two garage doors, reported the Associated Press.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. An investigation was underway.

Sullivan is a 15-veteran of the Larchmont police department. He had previously served six to seven years with the New York Police Department, reported the AP.
