E-ZPass SOS

Posted: Updated:

Most of us sign up for E-ZPass for two reasons: the lines are a lot shorter and you get a discount on the tolls.

Or do you? It depends on where your E-ZPass is from.

Thanks to an email from a fox 5 viewer, we've learned that although all E-ZPass tags look alike, they don't all offer the same benefits.

"I was being charged $8 a day instead of $4.40 a day. So even though it doesn't sound like a lot on a daily basis it really adds up," the email said. "So I called E-ZPass and I wanted to know why I wasn't receiving a discount and I thought it was a simple mistake. They told me 'oh, you have a New Jersey E-ZPass, and you live in New York, so you don't receive any discount."

Even though Christine lives in New York, she was somehow signed up for a New Jersey E-ZPass. She didn't think it mattered because she travels back and forth between both states.

It turns out an E-ZPass from New Jersey does not entitle you to discounts on New York roads and bridges, and vice versa. Although an E-ZPass from any state gets a discount on all Port Authority crossings, including the Holland and Lincoln tunnels and the George Washington Bridge.

Connecticut does not have its own E-ZPass system.

Christine has now canceled her New Jersey tag and has gotten one from New York so she can get the discounted rates.

Anyone can apply for an E-ZPass tag from any state or from multiple states, depending on your driving habits.
